Projects

Whether presenting an evening program about herbs or hosting and staffing the Garden Tour, members help educate the public about the many joys of gardening. Our programs include a variety of topics and lengths of service. Volunteers must complete a required number of volunteer hours to retain an active status, so put us to work!

  • Speakers Bureau: Would your group or organization like to learn more about composting or heirloom plants? Chances are, we have a speaker who can entertain and inform your group.
  • Garden Tour: Each June, MCMGA members generously give of their time by preparing immaculate examples of their favorites in the front lawn (and side lawn, and shady areas, and more!) Funds raised go to the Scholarship Fund.
  • Scholarship Program: Each year, the MCMGA presents students with financial help as they pursue their plans for an education in some aspect of horticulture.
  • Indiana State Fair: Master Gardeners from around the state sponsor the Master Gardener booth at the State Fair in August.
  • 4-H Building Gardens: The landscaping at this Alexandria site allows members to show off their talents while informing the many visitors to the Madison County 4-H fair.
  • Flower & Patio Show: Each March various Master Gardener Associations take turns staffing a booth to serve as a general gardening reference to passers-by.
  • Gruenewald Historic Home and Gardens:  The Gruenewald Heirloom Garden was created and is maintained by volunteers from The Madison County Master Gardener Organization.  All plants grown in the garden are varieties that were grown before 1900.
  • Gardening Series: From March through October of each year, MCMGA members present a series of free programs to the general public.
  • Pendleton South Elementary Greenhouse: Behind this bustling elementary school is an equally busy greenhouse where literally thousands of students have grown geraniums and mums for parents and friends.
  • Plant Sale 2007: Another of our big events, this May sale puts our propagation skills to work as we raise funds for the Scholarship Program and other projects.  Garden Fest 2007 Story & Pictures
  • Youth Gardening Day Camp: Purdue Extension's Master Gardener Youth Gardening Day Camp is designed to get kids excited about gardening and to learn a little bit while they are having fun.
  • Composting seminars: Do you know the best way to use lawn clippings and leaves for a healthy garden? This series provides both some tools and the know-how.
  • Web site: One of our most recent community outreach programs. Your comments are welcome!
