The purpose of the Master
Gardener scholarship program is to provide financial assistance to a
high school senior, who resides in Madison County, and has declared an
intent to study horticulture or a related subject, such as botany or
landscape architecture, agriculture, animal sciences, natural resources,
and environmental sciences. The scholarship will be awarded according to the
following guidelines:
- A high school senior, entering college, majoring in horticulture
or a related subject area.
- Lacking a viable High School Senior
applicant, continuing scholarships beyond the freshman year will be
considered.
- Award of scholarship will be made without regard to race, color,
sex, religion, handicapping condition, or national origin.
- More than one scholarship may be
awarded in any given year.
- Applicant must provide proof of college acceptance
upon award notification.
In judging applicants, the following points will be considered:
- Essay on reason for choosing horticulture or related college
major
- Teacher(s) or counselor recommendation
- Character
- Personality
- Leadership
- Scholarship – preference for students in the upper third of
their graduating class.
A scholarship committee of the Master Gardener Association will
review the applications. Personal interviews may be required, as
determined necessary by the scholarship committee. If the committee determines there
are no qualified applicants, the award may be withheld.
Additional application packets may be obtained from the Madison County Purdue
University Cooperative Extension Service office, located in the Madison
County Government Center. Applications (Click

Extension Service Office by 4:00 p.m. on the last business day of
February for the school year beginning the following September.
Candidates who submit their applications by February 14th will have the
benefit of a pre-award review.
The number and amount of awards are determined annually
by the board of directors of the Master Gardeners of Madison County.
Whenever possible, this determination will be made by
June 30th for the following year's award. For 2007,
there will be one or two scholarships in the amount of
$1,000.00 each.
Scholarship moneys can be
used for tuition, books, supplies, and other
school-related expenses, including room and board at
school-operated facilities. School-related expenses will
be clarified on a case-by-case basis, as the need
arises.
Scholarship payments will
be made directly to the college or university after
official notice of entry is presented by the award
recipient or sent by the college or university. The
scholarship's financial responsibilities are
administered through the Madison County Community
