2006 Scholarship Recipients Eric Miller, Brett
Bays, and Brittania Cassiday
The Master Gardener
Association of Madison County has established a
horticultural scholarship to provide post secondary
financial assistance to high school seniors who reside
in Madison County and have declared the intent to pursue
a college major in horticulture or a related area. While
the association typically awards a single $1,000
award, it is awarding three $1,000 scholarship awards for the coming school year.
This is the third consecutive year that the
organization has increased its scholarship award
because the candidates were so outstanding. The
applicants were evaluated on the basis of their interest
in horticulture, scholarship, leadership, personality,
character, and school counselor’s recommendation.
Certificates were presented to the recipients on May 8
at the Master Gardener Association’s monthly meeting. In
the past six years, the association has awarded 12
scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each.
One award was
presented to Pendleton Heights Senior, Brittania
Cassiday, daughter of Richard and Dorinda Cassiday.
Brittania plans to attend Purdue University, where she
will enroll in their School of Agriculture and major in
Animal Science. She has been involved in many school
activities, including National Honor Society, BETA,
Track and Field (pole vault record setter), TATU,
Pendletones, SADD, Hoosier Girls’ State, Lugar Youth
Leadership, W.E.E.M. – PHHS School Radio, Academic
Letter Jacket Program, and Thespians. She is ranked
second in her class at Pendleton.
A second award was
presented to Lapel High School Senior, Brett Bays, son
of Alan and Kelli Bays. Brett will major in Agricultural
Economics at Purdue University. He is involved in Future
Farmers of America, serving as the group’s President and
secretary, participated in the state and county
livestock judging contests, and was selected as Prom
King last year. He participated in the JV & Varsity
State Championship Basketball Team in the role of team
captain since 2006. He has received many 4-H awards,
including Reserve Grand Champion Showman in 2005. His
4-H involvement spans ten years.
Our third award
recipient is Madison-Grant Senior, Eric Miller, Grandson
of Richard and Carolyn Miller of Elwood. Eric will also
attend Purdue University, where he will major in Botany,
with emphasis on Plant Breeding and Genetics. His school
involvements include Track, Spanish Club, Science Club,
Chess Club, Art Club, Cross-Country, and Talent Show.
Our congratulations to these
outstanding and well-deserving candidates. We wish them great success in
the coming year!
