The Master Gardener Association of Madison County has established a horticultural scholarship to provide post secondary financial assistance to high school seniors who reside in Madison County and have declared the intent to pursue a college major in horticulture or a related area. While the association typically awards a single $1,000 award, it is also awarding three $500 scholarship awards to outstanding prior recipients who are continuing their horticultural studies for the coming school year. This is the third consecutive year that the organization has increased its scholarship award because the candidates were so outstanding. The applicants were evaluated on the basis of their interest in horticulture, scholarship, leadership, personality, character, and school counselor’s/advisor's recommendation. Certificates were presented to the recipients on June 11th at the Master Gardener Association’s monthly meeting. In the past seven years, the association has awarded scholarships totaling  $14,500.

A $1000 scholarship was awarded to 2007 graduate of Frankton Jr. Sr. High School, Kelsey Antrim, daughter of Kevin and Kimberly Antrim of Frankton. Kelsey plans to attend Purdue University where she will major in Agriculture Communications.  She ranked 11th  in a class of 70 students, was active  in the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, FFA, an inductee into the Academic Hall of Fame, a Senior Leader in her Church Youth Group, participated in Church mission trips, and was a volunteer at Morrisett Center.

A $500 second award was presented to Brittania Cassiday, who has just finished her 1st year at Purdue University.  Brittania is the daughter of Richard and Dorinda Cassiday of Anderson.  She was nominated "outstanding freshman", is a recipient of the John Hinkle Award, received honors recognition , made the dean's list, and joined several honor societies. She is pursuing a B.S. degree in Animal Sciences.

A $500 third scholarship was awarded to Brett Bays, son of Alan and Kelli Bays of Lapel.  Brett has finished his 1st year at Purdue University, where he is majoring in Agriculture Economics.  His goal is to have an impact on production, distribution, and consumption of agricultural commodities on local, state, and/or national levels. He is a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, and active in several campus clubs and intramural programs.  He is looking forward to another great year at Purdue.

The fourth award recipient this year is Brittany Simmons, daughter of Gary and Patricia Simmons of Elwood. She has been awarded a $500 second scholarship. Brittany has just finished her 3rd year at Purdue University, where she is majoring in agricultural Communication. Her goal is to have a career as a Purdue Extension Educator, and has been an assistant in the Madison County Extension office.  For the 2007 summer season, she has been accepted as a summer intern for Purdue Extension at Tipton County.

Our congratulations to these outstanding and well-deserving candidates. We wish them great success in the coming year!
