  The Madison County Master Gardeners Association has awarded three scholarships this year, to students residing in Madison County, who have declared their intent to pursue a college major in horticulture or a related area.

  The applicants were evaluated on the basis of their interest in horticulture, scholarship, leadership, personality, character, and their school counselor’s/advisor’s recommendation.  Certificates were presented at the May 12th Master Gardener meeting. 

   The MCMGA Scholarship program was started in 2000.  During that time, there have been thirteen $1000 scholarships, and three $500 scholarships awarded.

   A $1000 scholarship was awarded to 2008 graduate of Frankton Jr. Sr. High School, Mary Kelich, Daughter of Kevin and Catherine Kelich of Frankton. Mary plans to attend Purdue University where she will major in Biological and Natural Resources Engineering.  She ranked 4th in a class of 97, was active in the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, FFA, a Livestock Judge, was a tutor at school, was involved at SV Mercy Hospital,  Wilson Club, Youth Leadership Academy, St. Joseph Church Choir, and 4-H. 

   A $1000 scholarship was awarded to Drew Wilson, son of Steve and Amy Wilson of Anderson.  He has been accepted at Ball State University to study Zoology.  Drew has excelled in areas of science and history, biology and government, studying with advanced placement classes.  He has logged over 100 hours of volunteer service at Mounds State Park as a guide in naturalist programs. 

   A $1000 scholarship has been awarded to Laura Bohlander, daughter of Gregory and Pamela Bohlander of Elwood.  Laura has been accepted at Purdue University  and plans to major in Agricultural Economics.  Her activities in High School have been Tennis, Cheerleading, Latin Club, Student Council, Steering Committee, Business Professionals of America, National Honor Society, Youth Leadership Academy, Alternatives for Abused Women and Children, Anytime Soup Kitchen, Deacon at East Maine Street Christian Church and Handbell Choir.

   We at Madison County Master Gardener Association wish the best to these students as they pursue their fields of study.

   The Master Gardener Association funds its scholarship program through its annual plant sale and the annual garden tour.  The 10th annual garden tour is Saturday, July 12th, from 10am to 5pm.  Please support the scholarship program by purchasing a $5.00 ticket at any of the gardens on tour or by calling 643-7073.
