The Madison County Master Gardeners Association (MCMGA) has announced that Lapel High School senior Abbey Amos has been chosen as the recipient of the 2011 MCMGA $1000 scholarship. Abbey is the daughter of Frank and Michele Amos of Anderson.

To be eligible for this scholarship, recipients must reside in Madison County and have declared their intent to pursue a college major in horticulture or a related area. In addition to their interest in horticulture, applicants are evaluated on scholarship, leadership, personality, character and a recommendation by their school counselor/advisor.

Abbey has been accepted at Purdue University where she will major in Agri-business and minor in Ag-communications. At Lapel, Abbey ranks 4th in her class of 90, is active in band, cross country and cheerleading, is student council president and is a member of FFA and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. In 2010 she was named the Madison County Athlete of Character. She has been a member of the Lapel City Youth Commission, 4-H, 4-H Junior Leaders, Indiana Shropshire Association (queen), and Indiana Junior Beef Association. She attended the Youth Leadership Academy, Girls State, Senator Richard Lugar's and Senator Luke Kenley's Leadership Symposiums and served as a volunteer at Dove Harbor and Sister to Sister ministries. She attends Madison Park Church of God.

Since 2000, MCMGA has awarded twenty-one $1000 scholarships and three $500 scholarships. They fund the scholarship program through their annual plant sale which is set this year for Saturday, May 14th, from 9 a.m. to noon at the 4-H building in Alexandria and their annual garden tour set for Saturday, July 9th, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets for the garden tour are $5 and can be purchased by calling 765-378-3190 or at any of the gardens the day of the tour.
